Whitley Reserves finally got to play a pre-season friendly when they faced County league side Gosforth Garnett on the omni-turf at Burnside High. Whitley fielded a young side, with only 2 players who weren't in their teens and with new coach Andy Windscheffel in charge of proceedings. Julie Smith, who netted 18 goals last season, started where she left off by grabbing a hat-trick and last years Under 16 graduates Julie Duggan and Katie Blakemore were both on the scoresheet. The scoring was completed by Donna Thompson, one of the trialists on view who did her prospects no harm. Overall, Whitley were made to work hard by the fledgling Gosforth side and the new coach was pleased with the performance 'There were lots of positives in the game and a few things to work on but it was a good run out for both sides'

Whitley made the long journey to Lowick for an early evening kick off against Glendale. The sides were evenly matched with the more experienced Glendale side looking slightly more composed and organised against the young Whitley side. Katie Blakemore made the breakthrough and took Whitley into a 1-0 half time lead. In the second half, despite creating the majority of chances, Whitley saw their North Northumberland counterparts score 2 goals from 2 chances to win the game. Manager Andy Winscheffel saw plenty of positives in the game 'We played some good football and created enough chances to win the game but we learned a lot as well that we can work on in training'

Whitley then took hold of the game and after that initial shock, Cramlington rarely threatened. Whitley were 2-1 up at half time with two Jane Spoors goals and further second half goals from Julie Smith and Megan Tighe gave Whitley a comfortable win. Captain Janine Fagan was satisfied with the workout 'Once we settled, we were the better side and created numerous chances'

Whitley Reserves were introduced to the harsh realities of Regional football where the oppostion were gifted 3 chances and scored them all. Whitley suffered their first competitive defeat after holding Teesside for long periods of the game and creating their own chances that unfortunately weren't taken. Teesside had gone ahead on 14 minutes when their striker waltzed through unchallenged to slot past the Whitley keeper. 2-0 came on 32 minutes in a very similar fashion and Whitley went into half time with work to do. Their second half performance with a number of tactical changes was much improved but they fell further behind on 54 minutes. The remainder of the game was very even, with Whitley starting show some promise. However, a 3-0 defeat in their first game this season gives some room for improvement. Coach Andy Windscheffel was not too downhearted 'We more than matched Teesside at times but this was a game where they had 3 chances and scored whereas we didn't convert any of ours. However, I saw enough positives to know we will improve'

Whitley Reserves faced last seasons League runners up Spennymoor at their new home ground of Valley Gardens and gave as good as they got in the opening minutes on a wet muddy pitch. In a repeat of the previous week, Spennymoor scored on 3 occasions by playing straight through the middle of the Whitley team. Whitley responded throughout the game and created a number of one on ones with the visiting keeper but were unable to score. To make matters worse, at one stage they were playing with 9 players due to a sending off and an injury and were unable to breach the Spennymoor rearguard. Manger Andy Windscheffel 'Our players are having to learn fast. particularly the younger ones who are new to adult football, although it was one of our senior players who lost her discipline and was rightly sent off. Our performances have some postives though and I am sure we will continue to improve'

Whitley Reserves made the short trip through the Tunnel to meet newly promoted Boldon for what promised to be a close match. Boldon were first on the score-sheet after 10 minutes, just as Whitley were starting to come into the game. On 21 minutes, Megan Tighe played a great ball through for Emma Philipson to slot home. On 44 minutes, Philipson was again on hand to take a pass from Abby Forster, to make it 2-1 to Whitley at half time. After the interval, Boldon got back into the game and equalised on 57 minutes. However, Whitley took control of the game and went ahead on 64 minutes when Janine Fagan crossed from the left for Julie Smith to score at the near post. They put the game beyond doubt when Smith and Laurel Davidson broke from defence and Smith fed Davidson who showed great composure and rounded the keeper for a well taken goal. Manager Andy Windscheffel was pleased for the team to get a win 'This was a much better performance and we showed how we can play, especially in the second half when we dominated'

DURHAM CITY |

Whitley Reserves took on top of the table Durham City at Valley Gardens and buoyed by their first League victory last week looked to start the game with confidence. They started well and used the wings to great effect, Emma Philipson in particular was to the fore. They created chances but were unable to capitalise on some good opportunities. With the score at 0-0 at the interval, Whitley were looking solid and keeper Charlotte Furno hadn't had a meaningful save to make. In the second half, Durham as expected, came more into the game but Whitley held firm and were thinking that a draw would be a good result. Julie Smith had other ideas and when she was released down the right by Philipson on 80 minutes, she cut inside, beat a defender and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner for a well deserved goal. A 1-0 win for the Bay was a very good result and Manager Andy Windscheffel was pleased with the performance 'We were really good today, especially our defending which was much improved. All in all, a sound performance'

Whitley Reserves travelled to Murton to take on East Durham, who in their previous guise as Nissan, had always given Whitley's First team a tough match. The game was defined by the strong wind that East Durham took advantage of in the first half as they raced to a 4-0 interval lead. In fairness, they also played some good football and caused Whitley problems throughout the half. With the wind at their backs, Whitley looked to get themselves back into the game and the contest started to look more even. However, they were unable to make a breakthrough and East Durham added another goal to their tally and ran out comfortable 5-0 winners. Manager Andy Windscheffel was disappointed with the result 'The wind spoiled the game but nevertheless, East Durham were the better side and fully deserved their win'

LUMLEY |

Whitley Reserves faced another tough game against unbeaten Lumley - a side that last season were in the Regional Premier Division. The game was a tough physical encounter and the first half passed without either side being able to gain an advantage, with defences well on top. Lumley gradually started to come more into the game and there was little surprise when they took the lead on 72 minutes. However, Whitley hit back quickly just two minutes later as Julie Duggan fired a ball across for Megan Tighe to apply a neat finish. The game then settled again and became even more physical, with 2 Lumley players being sent off late in the game. The final score was a creditable draw for Whitley's youngsters against a very strong and experienced side and Coach Abi Haigh was satisfied with the result. 'Apart from the first 10 minutes, we battled well against a very strong side and I was pleased how we competed and held on for a draw'

Whitley made the journey to face Hartlepool St Francis, in a fixture reversed at short notice. They travelled with a depleted squad due to injury and unavailability and were soon behind on 7 minutes to a very good shot from the St Francis striker. Further goals on the 19 and 40 minutes saw Whitley trail 3-0 at the interval. They regrouped and changed formation, which saw them at last putting pressure on the St Francis defence and it was no surprise when they pulled a goal back on the hour as Janine Fagan played a ball across the face of goal for Laurel Davidson to fire home. A defensive lapse on 78 minutes saw St Francis restore their 3 goal advantage for 4-1. Just before the final whistle, Davidson repaid the favour to her strike partner Fagan as she held the ball and laid it into Fagan's path, wh o then ran on and slotted the ball into the corner.Whitley were beaten by a competant St Francis side, but more than held their own in a very good second half performance. Manager Andy Windscheffel relected on a game of two halves 'We were never in it up to the interval but for the second 45 minutes we started to play and looked far more threatening and defensively strong. Credit to St Francis and our thanks to them for staging the game at short notice'

EAST DURHAM |

Whitley reserves were at home to East Durham, a side that had beaten them convincingly in the away fixture.
Whitley got off to the worst possible start when on 5 minutes a shot from distance beat the Whitley keeper. They then composed themselves and got back into the game when a clearance fell to the feet of Laurel Davidson and she rifled it into the far corner.
Then came a mad 6 minutes as East Durham scored 3 times and could have had 4 as Whitley went to pieces. 29 minutes header from a corner, 32 minutes, ball loose in the box fired home, 34 minutes a penalty, saved by Charloote Furno. 35 minutes, ball rifled into the corner.
Just to make matters worse, just on half time East Durham made the score 5-1 as they scored again from a corner.
After the interval, Whitley changed shape and started to attack more. On 49 minutes a great ball from Janine Fagan found Emma Philipson wide on the right. She cut inside and scored a great goal from a tight angle.
Just as Whitley were starting to settle, East Durham hit the bar on 61 minutes and the rebound was knocked in for 6-2.
However, Whitley hit back almost immediately as Davidson played a diagonal ball to Philipson for almost a carbon copy of her first goal.
East Durham hit back in the 77 minute for 7-3 as a cross came in from the right, the Whitley keeper was bundled over, the ref saw no foul and the East Durham player knocked the ball into the empty net
5 minutes from time saw Whitley make the final score 7-4 to East Durham as they at last beat the East Durham offside trap as Laurel Davidson timed a great run from her own half and took a long ball from Charlotte Rowley and struck a great shot past the advancing keeper.
Manager Andy Windscheffel East Durham are a very good side, but on occasions we made it easy for them. We also missed some chances and on another day, the score could have been 7-7

Whitley Reserves played for the first time for almost a month against high-flying Hartlepool St Francis. Whitley had several players called up for first team duty and had 16 year olds Abby Wilkinson and Charlie Gorman on the bench. It was a nightmare start for Whitley as on 2 minutes, a defensive mix-up allowed the St Francis forward to pass the ball into the empty net. Worse was to come on 20 minutes as they went 2 behind following a free header from a corner. Despite playing well, Whitley were unable to finish their chances and had several one-on-ones withe the opposition keeper. Just before half time, they had a lifeline when an Abby Forster cross shot eluded everyone including the keeeper and found its way into the net. After the interval, Whitley battled hard but lacked the quality required to make the most of their possession. With 10 minutes to go, the game was over as a St Francis forward turned on the edge of the box and fired a great shot into the back of the net. Manager Andy Windscheffel was disappointed in defeat 'Conceding so early meant that we were chasing the game and we had the chances to score but it wasn't to be. However, there were some encouraging aspects of our play, particularly defensively that we can built on for future games'

Whitley Reserves faced Middlesbrough Reserves with an almost full strength team. They fell behind on 13 minutes when a long range shot was parried into the net by the Whitley keeper. They then got more into the game but fell further behind to a breakaway goal the the Boro forward calmly side footed in. A minute after the re-start, a great ball from Brooke Wilkinson found Laurel Davidson who slotted home.
Unfortunately they couldn't build on this and on 38 minutes fell further behind as a cross from the left was hit home from close range.
Just before half time they went 4-1 then 5-1 down as firstly a corner was headed in and then a free kick was headed home unchallenged. The scoring spree was complete at 5-2 to Boro on the stroke of half time as a long ball from Francine Hall was nicked away from the keeper by Davidson and she tapped it into the empty net.
After the interval, it was all Whitley Bay as they re-grouped, changed shape and threw everything at the Boro defence. They made it 5-3 as Julie Duggan played in Davidson, who grabbed her hat-trick with a great strike from distance. They got within touching distance on the 80th minute as yet another shot from Davidson was saved by the keeper and the rebound was smashed in by Charlotte Rowley.
They bombarded the Boro goal but were unable to get the equaliser and the match finished 5-4 to the Boro.
Manager Any Windscheffel was proud of his side's second half performance ' We played really well in the second half and almost snatched a deserved point'

They went 2-0 up on 70 minutes as an attack down the left released Abby Forster who applied a cool finish. The scoring was complete on 85 minutes as Francine Hall released Julie Duggan who slotted into the corner for a 3-0 win. Once again, Whitley were holding their own without creating many clear cut chances and the game appeared to be heading for a 1-0 defeat when on 80 minutes a great strike by a Birtley player on the edge of the box gave them a 2-0 victory. Whitley reversed the score from two weeks ago against Birtley and in reality it should have been more. Whitley were well on top in the first half, but hard work by the Birtley defence kept the game scoreless at half time. In the second half Whitley continued the pressure and on 55 mins Katie Blakemore was sent down the right,
beat a player on the byline with some nice skill and put a really good
cross in for Jules Smith to nip in and finish - it was a well worked move. On
75 mins Whitley had a free kick outside the box on the left, Abby Forster took this
and thanks to a deflection drove it in at the far post. With the final score at 2-0 to Whitley it was a deserved win and Manager Andy Windscheffel was happy with the points 'It took a while to get used to the breeze and the rock hard pitch, but overall we were good value for the win'
