Review of the Season 2008/09

After their promotion the previous season, Whitley took their place in the Regional Premier Division and knew that the season would be a steep learning curve against strong opposition week in week out. The team agreed objectives of being in contention at the top end of the table and at least a top three finish. Once again, further cup objectives were set to reach the Proper Rounds of the FA Women's Cup and reach another final in either the League Cup or County Cup.

The League campaign proved to be as tough as expected, but the objectives were met and Whitley could be satisfied with their performances in the second half of the season that saw them achieve a third place finish. Additionally, no side did the double against them and they were the only side in the League to beat all others at least once.

In the FA Women's Cup, Whitley reached the final qualifying stage, but were knocked out 2-0 by York City.

In the Northumberland County Cup Whitley beat Newcastle Reserves 3-0 in the semi final to reach the Final against Blyth Spartans. Whitley were the first side to beat Newcastle in this competition and ended their eight year domination. In the final, Whitley raced to a two goal lead, but disappointingly lost 4-2.

The League Cup campaign saw them knocked out at the Quarter Finals, 3-2 by Sheffield United, who went on to lift the trophy.

So the season came to an end and Whitley have learned some important lessons in a very competitive League. The players have come to terms with the effort required to win games and Whitley ended the season as the League's form team with five straight wins.

Injuries once again played their part, with Sarah Waldie and Emma Redhead still not recovered from long term injuries. We wish them well. However, Whitley operated a large squad and thankfully all are well and looking forward to next season.

A pleasing aspect of the season was the success of the Reserves side in producing players for the first team. Five players made the step up and two, 16 year olds Emma Philipson and Charlotte Rowley became key members of the squad.

Manager Colin Phillips looks forward to next season 'Now that we have had a season learning at this level, I would once again want us to be challenging at the top of the League and improve on our third place finish. Again, our aim is always to reach the Proper Rounds of the FA Women's Cup and now after experiencing losing at the County Cup Final, I would like to go back and win it!'

Congratulations to all the players for all their hard work and effort during the season.
