After missing out on the League title on goal difference last season, Whitley were determined to go one better and Manager Colin Phillips challenged the players to win every match and put the League beyond doubt. Further objectives were set to reach the Proper Rounds of the FA Women's Cup and to reach a final of the other cup competitions that were entered.
The major objective of the title and therefore promotion was achieved on March 2nd with a 3-2 win at nearest rivals Spennymoor and Whitley went on the finish the season with a 100% record.
In the FA Women's Cup, wins against Newfield, Darlington RA and Team Northumbria ensured that the team were in the 1st Round, where they were drawn against Blackpool Wren Rovers of the North West Premier Division. In a close match, they were beaten 2-0 by a side that have subsequently gained promotion to the Northern Combination.
The Northumberland County Cup saw Whitley beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 in the Quarter Final and once again, drew Newcastle in the semis. In a very tight game that could have gone either way, Whitley were eventually beaten 2-1 and Newcastle went on the lift the trophy yet again.
The North East League Cup was Whitley's last chance to reach a final, and they did so in style, accounting for Spennymoor, Newfield and Howden Clough en route to the final against York City. At Darlington RA's ground, Whitley overcame their more illustrious Premier Division opponents by 2-0, with goals from Kerry Davison and Laura Darmody.
Mention must be made of the serious injuries sustained to Whitley players this season. Helen Graham, Emma Redhead, Sarah Waldie and Laura Wilson had serious injuries during games that have kept them out for the rest of the season. Lynsey McLean was also injured during a match and only returned for the final game of the season. Jo Suddes played no part since November due to an achilles injury and Kerry Davison and Julie McDonnell have both missed weeks due to injury.
We wish all the long term injured players a speedy recovery and better luck next season.
With expectations exceeded and 2 trophies in the cabinet, Whitley look forward to life in the North East Premier Division and Manager Colin Phillips looks ahead to the new season 'It will be a tough League campaign and I would like us to be competitive and still challenging at the end of the season. Once again, the Proper Rounds of the FA Cup must be the aim and now that we have a Cup final win under our belts, I will be greedy and ask for 2 finals next season!'
Congratulations to all the players for a fantastic season, the league and cup double is a great achievement.
