Unibond Division One
Monday 13th April 1998 Gretna V Whitley Bay 0-1
Whitley Goalscorers : Mawson

Whitley Bay made it two away wins in three days when they completed the double over Gretna. The team showed three changes from Saturday with Andy Dodds, Ian Metcalf and Tony Halliday, back from his cricketing tour of New Zealand, replacing the injured Gary Lormor and the unavailable Richie Bond and Stephen Bray.

The first chance came after ten minutes when David Mawson got in a good left wing cross and the Gretna defence got into all sorts of problems before eventually clearing the ball for a corner. At the other end Terry Burke, diving full length managed to turn a 30 yard shot from Armstrong around the post. Paul Greenwood was sent racing away up the right wing after a superb ball from Andy Blower but unfortunately no Whitley player could get onto the end of his cross.

Hodgson did well for Gretna and his shot flew just wide of the far post after 23 minutes. Whitley should have taken the lead after 31 minutes following an excellent through ball by Steve Kendal but David Mawson and Glen Liddle got in each others way and the chance was missed. Tony Halliday had a good shot from 30 yards after 38 minutes but his effort just cleared the bar. Thomson was put through for Gretna but Andy Blower got back to make a great tackle before the Gretna player could shoot.

The second half started with Whitley Bay well on top and both David Mawson and Glen Liddle went close early on. Then on the hour mark Glen Liddle turned beautifully but his shot was inches over the bar.

A Paul Greenwood through ball after 75 minutes should have been cleared by O'Hagan in the Gretna defence but the big centre half slipped leaving David Mawson clear on goal and he made no mistake with a low shot across the keeper and into the far corner. In the last minute David Mawson was unlucky when Johnston in the home goal kept his shot out with his legs.
